[The camera starts recording, showing the interior of what looks to be a cabin, only illuminated by the glow of an oil lamp standing on the table. A (currently hatless) man is sitting in front of a large loom where part of a large tapestry hangs, using his knife to spread the threads so he can use them to weave them into knots and such.]

[He finally turns to the camera, calm blue eyes creased in a benevolent expression.]

You know, it's rather interesting. Some people believe their lives are governed by fate, and others say that they're free to do what they want. Some say it's futile to do anything, and others disagree, saying your can change your future as much as you want to.

[He turns towards his loom again, cutting out a troublesome thread, before speaking again.]

But what most everyone agrees on is that life is made of choices. You are where you are now because you decided to go a certain way, talk to a certain person, see a certain thing...

I believe everyone has a choice. It just depends on how you use it.

[And he smiles at the camera.] So, I'm curious, people of Vatheon...what sort of choices have you experienced in your lives?

Hmmm. Then, you'd have to take into account the decisions made after your life was shaped. Of course, everyone has their lives shaped from the beginning. But even a well-bright up child who was told not to do any wrong can become a murderer. And one who was raised in the streets and taught to steal may change and become the most charitable person in the city.

It depends on the person themselves. You choice to stand up against those taking you down might be as life-changing as the choice to essentially accept your fate.

I see. [Perhaps meeting that woman in Junon was a fortuitous event then, since it was fighting her and her question which had made him think beyond duty and caused him to actually cease allowing the Company to control all of his actions. To think of himself as something more than just a weapon again.

He nods quietly in silent understanding at the words.]

Do you think it is possible for choices made here to affect a person even after they've left this city? Or do we return to our places as if our time here, our choices, what we learned here... all for naught?

[identity profile] nos-servabit.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends. I, personally, do not know what occurs if we go back. I have heard some say that we don't remember anything that happens here or the people we've met when we go back.

...But memories aren't all that there is to a person. I think, somehow, people's souls can be touched by experiences. So, even if you don't remember anything, you'd still feel something when you come on a similar situation. Like deja vu, in a way.

[He's not certain just how that would affect him, though he wanted to think if he did end up going back; he'd remember in some way that what was written by Hojo was nothing short of misguided misconceptions by scientists too blinded by trying to create something greater than they were to realize that they were playing god with something they actually knew nothing about. While Gast and his mother had realized their mistakes after the fact, there were still others who saw him and his friends as nothing more than specimens and a means to boost ones ego.]

One can hope that such might be the case.

Yes, hopefully. It'd be a shame that nothing that happened here didn't happen for a reason, to change us for the better.

Even if such is the case... [He pauses just for a moment before deciding to actually verbally commit to the decision he's come to now. Especially after certain conversations with two of his friends]

I've decided to not allow what occurred or might have occurred back home to affect my actions here. [Especially as it seemed to him that to have what he currently did here was a second chance to have his friends with him without Company interference or duties. It behooved him to at least try to make the most of what he had been given here, since he could end up possibly losing it at any given moment.]

That's good. Coming here is like a fresh start. A blank slate, if you will. Nobody can judge you for what you did before, and you can start anew. Like a phoenix out of the ashes, so to speak.
