Forgiveness.

[Hello, fellow Vatheonites. Jacob hasn't spoken to you in a while. He gazes at the camera with pensive eyes, pausing before continuing to speak.]

Forgiveness is a rather complicated subject. Everyone knows what forgiveness is, but when it comes to actually thinking about how to use it in a situation, there are no clear rules about it. When do you forgive somebody? Do you forgive them when they prove they are not the person they are? Do you forgive them because you love them and want to keep the relationship intact as before?

How many times can you forgive a person if they do the same wrongful deed over and over again? Can you forgive a person who hurt you? Hurt your loved ones? Destroyed all the things you enjoyed?

I think it's different for every person. It is your choice on whether you forgive or you don't. Though I would rather forgive than not- if you let the memory of the deed fester in your heart for a long time, it transforms into a grudge, and you can be driven to do acts of vengeance and violence in that state of mind.

Some people believe that everyone deserves a chance. But what do you think? Do you pardon the murderer, save the sinner, let the prodigal son back into your life again?

That's god. You shouldn't be forced into a mold that you don't want to fit in. Against all odds, be yourself. It is right to hide some things, of course, if you are in danger of being hurt by stating your beliefs, but you should never let society change you completely as a person. You are not a puppet at the end of a string.

Yes, forgiving someone who wants to change and a heartless serial killer are two different things. You should only forgive when you feel comfortable about it.

[He shakes his head slightly, looking amused.] That is only because of what I do, Karkat. It comes with my duty. It's not a power...I just simply know more about people so I can act accordingly.

I don't intend to, either. I'm my own fucking person, my own fucking troll, and fuck anyone who tries to make me be someone else.

And it is too a power. I'm a leader and shit, but I don't magically know things about people without being told.

[A smile.] Well, you protect your fellow trolls. I protect something which is found in every single person in the world. I am no leader, Karkat. In order to understand what I protect, I must be able to understand the people around me as well.

That doesn't even make sense, Jacob. How the fuck does knowing shit I hardly ever tell anyone fit in with that? And what the fuck is it you protect?

Because what I guard is in everyone I meet, and for that reason I am familiar with almost everyone I meet. It's like seeing the same words repeated in every book you read, and I know the source so well that I can instantly understand them for what they are.

I protect a sort of "light", if you will- it is the source of many great and powerful things.

What source? What fucking light?

Physically, it's a cave of light, but it's far more than that. Like I said, this light is found within everyone who has ever lived.

But men want more of it and will hurt others to find it and take it all for themselves. That is why it is my duty to protect it.

Why would I? It's all true.

Because you won't admit having a power that you obviously do have. And a cave of light? You're a human from some earth, aren't you? Even with your freaky powers, earth seemed a lot more boring than that.

[He smiles, as if amused.]

Earth has many things besides caves of light that make it interesting, Karkat. You just haven't looked at it closely enough.

Right, and I'm just supposed to turn on my husktop and open up a viewport for some asshole on earth--except, oh wait! I can't do that, because I don't have a husktop anymore, and we're stuck in a fucking undersea bubble. And even with that island up there, I don't know if this is an earth for sure, and it's not like we can build a boat and sail past it to the nearest landmass - who the fuck knows how close that would be - because there's a barrier around it.

So yeah, sure, it's because I haven't looked closely enough.

I wasn't saying to look at it now, Karkat. I'm just saying in general, that if you ask people, you'll find earth has many secrets.

Every place has its secrets.
